AWS Elemental MediaLive

AWS Elemental MediaLive is a cloud-based, broadcast-grade video processing service that creates high-quality streams for delivery to broadcast TVs and internet-connected devices. The service encodes video in real time, compressing live sources into high-quality streams. Combined with other AWS media services it provides reliable, cloud-based video processing and delivery of live broadcasts and events.

Schedule or dynamically switch inputs

Add multiple video inputs and switch using the schedule feature, or dynamically switch by creating input switching actions as needed. Bitrate and resolution can be easily customised based on your input video, output requirements, or both.

Manages every step of your streamed content, from encoding to captioning

MediaLive’s industry-leading technology for encoding natively supports all standard codecs (MPEG-2, AVC, HEVC, etc.), resolutions (SD, HD), and broadcast features (ad insertion using the SCTE35 standard, captioning, audio descriptors, loudness correction, etc.).

Built-in infrastructure redundancy protects against downtime

When you create a channel in MediaLive, the service deploys redundant infrastructure in two AWS availability zones (AZs). Each component is monitored for health and the service detects any degraded resources and replaces them with new ones to prevent your channel suffering any downtime.

Our work with MediaLive

We designed and delivered a cloud platform for My5, Channel 5’s on-demand TV service. Our solution depends on AWS MediaLive to encode video for live streaming to smart TVs, mobiles, and third-party apps.

Compared to the previous system, we were able to reduce costs, enhance availability and scalability, and significantly reduce the cost and complexity of Channel 5’s disaster recovery plan for the service.

This has allowed Channel 5 to become the first public broadcaster to achieve rollout of the new Freely TV format, which is scheduled to become an integral part of mainline linear TV experience over the next few years.
